People of PepsiCo – Marie Quintana

For the first time in my career, I was sitting and interviewing someone that wasn’t looking at me with the hopes that I would extend a job offer to them shortly after our discussion was complete.  It was an interesting switch in that while I wasn’t hunting for examples that would allow me to discover if this person would be a good addition to one of teams I was building or staffing (this person was already employed by us) I found that I was still probing for more information, asking for real world examples and yes, hanging on every word.  Why?  Because I think that for me, genuine interviews – regardless of what type – are about connecting with someone and learning more about them as a person.
In this instance, it was my pleasure last week to be able to catch up with Marie Quintana, PepsiCo’s VP of Multicultural Sales as part of a “People of PepsiCo” approach that you’ll be seeing much more of over the next few weeks and months.
Having joined PepsiCo in 1998, Marie has held other executive positions including VP of Technology and VP of IT Capability.  As a member of PepsiCo’s global Diversity and Inclusion Council, the Latino Executive Council and a founding member of the Women of Color Alliance, she promotes community service among the company’s Employee Resource Groups.

3rd Time’s A Charm With Google+

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Google and the myriad of toys they’ve made available to the public and geeks at large.  So it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that I’ve jumped ‘all in’ with Google+ over the last few weeks.  And while I’ve some mixed feelings about portions of the new Social Network, I’m certainly excited for the project as a whole.  In fact, the simplicity of the user interface has inspired me (at least temporarily) to begin a redesign effort on my own blog, RecruiterGuy.net, with the goal being to deliver my authored content in a very clean and focused manner.

Just in case you’ve been living in a cave, Google+ was recently released (June 28th) in what could still be described as ‘limited waves’.  The new platform is most commonly hailed as Google’s answer to Facebook.  After all, it’s Google’s 3rd attempt to connect the dots of the various tools and resources we’ve tied our identities to over the years.  And while I won’t use this article to give you a complete tour of Google+ (hey, just Google it!) you should know that in under a month the new social network has grown to over 20 million members – something that took Facebook Continue Reading…

And The Winner Is…

Every year The Redhead (my wife) watches The Oscars. She loves to see celebrities walk on the red carpet, check out the expensive jewelry or clothing, enjoy the faces of the winners and hear them give the rushed acceptance speeches. We as viewers are always shown the top handful of contenders for each award just before the envelope is ripped apart and the winner’s name (or team) announced. It adds to the suspense and certainly allows all of us to compare the participants in our heads and draw our own rushed conclusions to see how far off-base or how we “knew” who was going to win.

This is okay for most of us because it’s just the movies.  We’re not trying to reproduce, improve or even learn from each actor or director’s contribution – we’re merely trying to enjoy what they’ve sold to us.  It’s for this reason that I struggle every year with the way many awards are handled within professional circles.  After all, these people (my peers and colleagues) aren’t working hard for my enjoyment – they’re trying to make a difference within an industry in the hopes of impacting the job seeker experience in a positive way.

So here are a few quick items that I think it’s fair to consider in regards to how awards Continue Reading…

Recruiters are Lazy?!

I want to be clear – as a recruiter and veteran in the HR/Recruiting field for almost 18 years, I like to think I know how to recognize a good thing when it relates to job seekers and candidate engagement. Heck, trying to find better and sustainable ways to connect talent to big recruiting teams is something I’ve been passionate about for years.  So it should be no mystery that I’m certainly interested in features or updates like the one recently at LinkedIn that will allow job seekers to express interest in job postings and share their online profiles with just the click of a button.  Which organisations decide to adopt this based on their application processes (or restrictions) should be interesting – and for the record, I think this is a step towards the evolution of both online and mobile applications.

What I do NOT think is that we’re necessarily seeing a definitive step towards the “death of job boards” big or small.  My opinion is contrary to the one that Dan Schawbel shares in his Continue Reading…
