Context is King! Long Live The King!

Posted by Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy) in social networks , recruiting , networking , job seeker , brand , #socialclouds

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

RecruiterGuy - Context is KingI've been saying it within smaller personal and professional circles for just over a year.  I even brought it into a very deep conversation in the wee hours of the morning with some peers and colleagues while on the road recently.  But I haven't really said much about it here.  So I will.

I'm of the opinion that "Content is King" only when it's all about you.  It's time to realize that the revolution is upon us and that "Context" (with your audience/connections in mind) is about to be crowned as the new leader of our social recruiting kingdoms.

For years we've treated job seekers as just that - people seeking jobs.  But what if we (the recruiting industry) started to treat them as members of a club versus people actively or passively looking for work?  What if we dialed in to their wants and needs just like we would with our customer base?  What if we looked for that emotional territory that we could stick a flag in the ground and claim as our own - so that whether or not they are actively looking to work with us they'll continue to return?

Where On Earth Is RecruiterGuy?

Posted by Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy) in speaking , recruiterguy , google

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

RecruiterGuy at PepsiCoRecently I've fielded quite a few emails and questions about where I'll be speaking again or which events I'd recommend.  While I do not profess to be the worlds best speaker or the best judge of what events someone should or should not attend, I thought it would be easier to add a quick calendar to the site that will include both.

Obviously I was excited to speak at the Google campus at the Social Recruiting Summit with friend and colleague Michael Marlatt - so an item like this got quite a bit of promotion both here on the site and via my Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn networks.  But for the day to day networking events or TweetUps I really don't announce them.  This new calendar should help a bit if anyone is interested - or would like to connect while I'm out and about.

Having pointed to the new calendar I will also throw in that I have the privileged opportunity to speak at the 1st Annual PepsiCo Talent Acquisition Summit next week on June 24th.  What's so much fun about this is that I'll be able to share more about Mobile and Social Recruiting while getting a chance to meet and network with the impressive HR and Recruiting talent at PepsiCo.

What I learned (and taught) at Camp...

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

Google.comSo I'm back from the Social Recruiting Summit that was held on the Google campus in Mt. View, CA.  And while I had a great time presenting to the attendees on the subject of mobile marketing for recruitment, I found that I had an even better time interacting with the people I've known online for over a year now - but had yet to meet in person.

Don't get me wrong - I knew that I'd enjoy the chance to meet some of the most influential folks in the recruiting blogosphere but before leaving for the event it was something that really sat in the shadow of standing up and presenting on Google's campus.  I mean, c'mon... it's Google's campus, right?

So before I continue with what exactly I took away from the event - take a second and thumb through the session that Michael Marlatt and I conducted.  I like to think that we put a pretty sexy spin on the visuals while making sure the message got across. (click on the arrows in the bottom right to navigate - and be sure to go ALL the way to the end!)

If you don't have FLASH installed or can't view the presentation for some reason you can grab the slideshare version here.

Mobile Recruiting IS Social

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

Text RecruiterGuy to 41411Anyone keeping up with social recruiting should have found it hard to miss the buzz surrounding the upcoming event next week taking place on the Google campus.  Several terrific folks will be found speaking at the Social Recruiting Summit event on 6/15, each touching on various points of interest within the channel of Social Recruiting.  You can check out the headliners here and of course grab some additional information here.

I was honored to be asked to speak about Mobile Recruitment in partnership with friend and colleague Michael Marlatt.  I've a tremendous amount of respect for the passion that Michael has for this niche within our industry and know that we'll have a wonderful time presenting to an already sold out event.

With mobile marketing the only method of communication that can deliver more forms of targeted marketing than any other mass medium we'll be asking participants why they're hesitant to jump in - and clearing up a few myths around this marketing phenomenon.   In addition to busting through rumors and blowing out traditional thoughts on what "mobile marketing" means to most we'll show that results are easily measured and more instant than any traditional methods of recruitment marketing.  (oh.. and our presentation is just plain sexy.)

So if you missed out on getting your hands on a ticket (that sold out at an insane speed) be sure to catch the live stream and chat of the event over on the Social Recruiting Summit site.  I'd be a liar if I didn't tell you that if I wasn't speaking I'd have made sure to catch the presentations in one format or another!

Pass this article along via your bookmarks and tweets to help raise awareness of this exciting event while boosting the Online participation on 'gameday.'

Did Someone Tweet They Needed A Job?

Posted by Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy) in twitter , sourcing , social networks , recruiting , boolean

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

RecruiterGuy on TwitterI find Twitter fascinating.  I see it as many different things ranging from a search engine to an instant messaging device to a blogging platform to a time suck.  And while these are just a few of the things that I myself have used it for - I love them all.

One of the first things recruiters have been struggling to understand since it's release is if Twitter is a viable tool for recruiting and/or sourcing.  Of course if we're honestly looking for the answer to this issue we've got to understand that recruiting and sourcing are two different things.  Yes, I know that many Recruiters source and that many Sourcers recruit - but the practices of Recruiting vs. Sourcing are very different.

Recently there was even a bit of static in the blogosphere about how social networking and new media channels might, or might not, be used for recruiting.  And while this sparked some debate about what "social networks" work best and who had the biggest tweeter network I thought I'd try a little something this week.  Let's walk through a quick experiment performed yesterday and create a little dialogue about what we think the results might mean, shall we?

Recruiting Evolution

Social Recruiting - image courtesy of Fistful Of Talent

So there's a bit of a fuss online with recruiters that took offense to Peter Weddle's recent article that social media within the realm of recruiting is just a scam.  Some said he was wrong and others outright demanded an apology .  I'm a fan of Weddle and have been for some time - so I'm just going to throw out something to think about and see how things pan out.

I'll keep it simple - social networks for recruiting are rapidly becoming a staple.  And if you're a recruiter that's using them effectively you will no doubt have your favorites.  For this RecruiterGuy I'm finding  that Twitter and LinkedIn continue to be powerhouses with Facebook and various niche communities not far behind.  Of course this wasn't the case a few years ago.  But wait... that means things are changing, right?

Quit frankly, the recruiting and staffing industry is evolving and at only a slightly slower pace than we see the technology driving the evolution of online communities and rapid fire communication channels.  Think about it... 5 years ago you wouldn't have found many companies with corporate "pages" on Facebook.  You wouldn't have found career portals with social media buttons throughout.  You wouldn't have found over 1,000 recruiters on an "instant messaging" micro-blog platform.
You also wouldn't have found me - telling you - that it works when done right.

Fancy Recruiting - With the Basics in Mind...

Posted by Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy) in twitter , RG's Toolbox , recruiterguy , mobile , job seeker , facebook , cloud recruiting

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

iPhoneI'm passionate about a few things...  My family, my work, and not being bored.  So it's important to me that I try to do everything I can to keep things fresh and exciting... to really push every aspect of the things I like so that they're always at their best - or most productive.  One of the things that I think are important under the banner of family is my health.

So I'm back into my rhythm at the gym.  Trying out new things and making sure that I'm not on any specific or hard-core plan - the idea being to keep the body guessing and the workouts fun.

Yesterday's workout was nothing but sets of Bridge work.

RecruiterGuy Bridge Front Bridge
Side Bridge
One Leg Front Bridge
Uni Glute Bridge
Side Bridge & Abduction
Twisting Bridge
Front Bridge (w/Ball)
Knee In Side Bridge
Uni Glute Bridge (w/Ball)
Alternating Bridge

Nothing fancy, right?  Nothing major.
But at the end of the workout, just ~45 minutes later, I felt like I'd moved a mountain.  And I was reminded of something...

The basics are always there.  And they're effective.

Crazy Sexy Cool (Recruiting/Sourcing) Part II

Posted by Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy) in sourcing , RG's Toolbox , recruiterguy , google , cloud recruiting , boolean

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

DashboardWell, you've done it.  You created a tab on iGoogle and dug around through the literally hundreds of widgets and add-ons and have created an interesting place to search for job seekers.  Maybe you even got a little crazy and did some searching for complete custom tabs like the Twitter tab or even a tab dedicated to news or your favorite sports team - but that was just you doing your thing, right?  All in the name of research, of course.

But you have to admit that at least once - even if only once - you wondered what exactly went into creating a custom search engine... and how you might use it for recruiting and sourcing.  Sure you did.  So what follows is a basic outline of what can be started using this Google based tool.  I'll just focus on two of the neat features to get you started.  Let's see where it goes from there.

It starts off simple enough.  Just log in to your Google account and then point your browser to the Google Custom Search Engine page.  Some of you that have been around a while remember this as Google Coop.  No matter - you'll have fun here either way.

Removing Some Suck from Twitter on #FollowFriday!

Posted by Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy) in twitter , social media , recruiterguy

Chris Hoyt (RecruiterGuy)

I have an idea.  Let's see what we can do to suck the value out of Twitter.  C'mon... I have some great ideas and you know you want to help out, right?

Ideas that Suck for Twitter Let's create an auto-follow service so that you can immediately follow anyone that follows you first.

This way your twitterstream is full of dialogue from anyone that simply decides to follow you - regardless of what you decide that you're using Twitter for.  Messages about stuff that has absolutely no relevance to anything you could care about in the least will chirp through your tweet deck columns like tiny birds stricken with mad cow disease.  Information from people that are of no interest to you at all (or that have no real interest in you!) will hit your desktop or mobile device with every server ping.
Imagine how great it will be to fire up your twitter tool of choice and see tons of messages about hosting services, dating hotties in your area, and real estate deals across the country.  Once we get your (auto)followings into the thousands maybe we could actually make a game of digging through the messages to find something from the people you were actually interested in when you started.

Or maybe we can start a service that will guarantee you 50,000 followers if you'll just follow 5 people.
If we do this right we might gain the popularity that Bill Gates gets every year when he passes around that email.  You know the one... where he generously offers up $5 to you every time you forward it.  You did forward it, right?  C'mon... that's easy money!

Oh!!!  What if we engineer a service where you can earn money for people clicking your shortened links.
Work with me on this one... you could actually just push through as many links as possible - regardless of what they're about - and rake in the cash.  After all, if you're using the auto-follow (autofollitter) service and our chain-twitter (chitter) service then just imagine the possibilities.

After all - isn't this what Twitter's all about?  Let me help you with this one...  The answer should be, "NO!"
