It's almost toward the end of the workday and I've just gotten to my room here in Houston after swinging by the Westin Galleria to help with setup issues for tomorrow. As per my last blog entry I'm here in Houston for the Texas Diversity & Leadership Conference. I'm excited to be on a panel discussing the the current trends in regards to the demographics of the workforce and how those trends influence recruiting strategies.
How will I answer? Guess you'll have to be there to see, but rest assured I'll share later if you can't make it. :-) Of course, if I get the "thumbs up" from Dennis Kennedy I'll be videoing some of the content and posting here and on my YouTube page.
On the way down I thought I'd play with BrightKite - a neat little addition to the 'micro blogging' arsenal I've got sitting in a holster on my hip. One month ago the gang at BrightKite handed out beta invitations to this geo-mapping wonder. This little gem lets you send out quick snippets as you would on Twitter (and it does send them to Twitter, btw) but as an addition includes a link to a map showing right where you're standing! (If you've set the permissions to allow such detail, that is.) If you're interested in playing with this new toy, I've got 3 invites to share - just comment below and I'll send them to the email you use to post your comment.
I struggled this morning on my blackberry and getting any kind of effective posts done via the browser (lots of 404 errors) but was able to quickly send a few messages out through SMS without any issues. Of course, I'm still working on how the heck to update on the fly and avoid using only SMS updates - could get expensive for some I'd imagine. I haven't dug too far into the site or the application yet, but with a version released for the iPhone I can't imagine there isn't a blackberry release already published or at least that is too far behind.
And finally, I've managed to decide on a video editing application (picked Windows Movie MakerOVER Muvee!) and have begun playing with the new Flip Ultra by shooting a legitimate vlog intro complete with background music and text effects. Oh yeah - I said it - "special effects." The part I'm pleased with is that the editing only took about 10 minutes total - to include playing around with settings and various tunes. The part I'm not so pleased with? The talking head in the video. :-)
good to see video of you instead of just pics - but we could use more of the 'rained on' look mister rg. ;-)
i don't think i understand the value of the brightkite site but would love to be able to be at the diversity event in houston but i'm in georgia. i hope you'll show vids of your talk. how will you talk about demographics related to race and gendor and what that means to recruiting?
It should be clear that this is the personal blog of a professional recruiter and content found here may not necessarily reflect that of the author's employer.
