Can You See Me Know?

I love that I have two children that really embrace technology. It’s so interesting for me to see experience how they communicate with one another and their friends and family as a result of having so many communication channels at their fingertips (literally) 24/7.
As a huge fan of video communications, it’s exciting to see signs that video is beginning to trump even SMS for quick and immediate communication in some instances. Need a real-life and easy example to help illustrate the point? Experience this one with me, won’t you?

Just last night my oldest sat next to me in the car where I was picking her up after the final night of “closed auditions” for the high school dance team. She carried with her an envelope that contained a note from the judges that was the final word related to her hopes of making the team and the ultimate result of a week of auditions that had taken place from 4-6pm every night that week.

Of course I had wanted the answer as much as she did (maybe more) and I asked her if she’d made the team before she’d even had both feet in the car.
“I don’t know yet,” she said nervously. “I haven’t opened it yet!”

As it turns out, she wouldn’t open the envelope until she was in a semi-private location where she could turn on her camera phone and record the experience – for better or worse. Her plan was that, regardless of the outcome, she’d be sharing it with her friends and family that weren’t able to be at the closed auditions, in as “live” a format as possible. They would know (or learn about) the results just like they were there as it happened.

Google Plus vs. Facebook (it’s only just started)

Google Plus Notifier

The Zen of Communication

It’s that time of year when I radically revamp my blog, update profile pictures and re-define/re-visit my social workflow. I’ll typically spend a good part of holiday time and early January doing this – yet this year, I feel compelled to take a slightly different approach.

You see, for the past few years I’ve struggled to get (most specifically) my Google and Google Apps accounts to play nicely together in my own workflow. I’ve longed for the day that I’d have the option to merge the two accounts together and I’d be allowed to quickly and easily find that zen place between the two – letting me move quickly between products and applications from that single dashboard and ultimately removing the burden (it’s a heavy one, right?) of needing to move between accounts and login pages.

Of all of my communication channels, this has been the hurdle that I’ve cursed the most because of the potential that I’ve seen and was really never able to fully take advantage of. But recently it dawned on me that this is because I’ve approached my Google account much differently than I have any other social or communication tool… until the launch of Google+, that is.

So now that my “communication channel” has become a “social & communication network” I think that it’s time I took a step back to try to re-define sharing and talking with peers, colleagues, jobseekers, family and friends. I believe that a more holistic strategy is required of myself (and perhaps you?) in 2012 to make the most of the socialsphere we call home.
