Let’s face it, gang. We’re pretty smart people. After all, you dress yourself in the morning, you manage to feed yourself when you’re hungry, and you’re reading one of the best blogs out there related to recruiting/technology/life. Okay… 2 out of 3 ain’t bad – but my quick point today is that most of us are cognitive enough to know what’s going on around us or to at least to focus on what we’re asking of others, right?… RIGHT?
How you do your job says a lot about you. But I believe that how you think about your job is just as important. If you’re a recruiter and simply plodding along filling requisitions in a transactional manner (post, screen, fwd, hire, post, screen, fwd, hire) or a manager that settles for simply opening and closing envelopes rather than pushing them – that’s fine. But imagine for a minute what might happen if you actually spent a small amount of time each week evaluating how your job was done and reviewing the strengths you or your team possess.
Suppose for the moment you found what your team was doing right and really took those strengths to the next level – as opposed to pounding away at weaknesses. What if we really focused on what was working and made it even stronger and faster (and in the long run, staffed our teams or picked our projects accordingly!) I can tell you that if done properly, those that simply “enjoy” what they are doing will become “passionate” about what they do. Is 30 minutes a week something that you can afford if the win is this great? Uhm… Yeah.
Hey, we’re smart people so I won’t bore you with the ripple effect this could have on moral, retention, return on investment, etc. if done right.
The bottom line is this: I won’t throw a “Hey, here’s how to fail” post to you – I find most of them remedial and sometimes even insulting. Heck, everybody already knows how to fail – we’re human. What I will ask you is if you know how to focus on what matters or if you’re simply functioning in a transactional tunnel and thinking this is the best you’ve got because someone else said so or because you aren’t evolving.
Are you really focused or are you just taking your easy wins the hard way?
