Why oh why won’t companies stop calling things ‘Beta’?! Don’t they know that when they advertise that something is in ‘Beta’ or ‘Limited Release’ or ‘Sneak Peek’ that RecruiterGuy just has to play with it? It’s downright exhausting – especially in the arena of social networking browser/desktop driven apps.
Of course, exhausting doesn’t mean it isn’t fun.
Today’s find is Yahoo‘s new desktop/web hybrid application called BrowserPlus. The plug-in is apparently only available as a sneak peek with a selected few demos like using it to drag-and-drop photos to Flickr from your desktop (okay – you’ve got my attention…)Â
From the BrowserPlus website:
The most unique attribute of BrowserPlus is its ability to update and add new services on the fly without a browser restart or even reloading the page! As a user, this means no more installers to run or losing your place on the web. For developers, you can check for and activate new services with a single function call, pending user approval – we handle the complexity of software distribution and updates for you.
Obviously not ready for a major release (even by their own admittance) we have to wonder if the sudden push to get people involved and take part in the ‘send us an idea’ approach is a result of MySpace moving full speed ahead with Google Gears. Enough blogging about it… I’ve got to check my email to see if they’ve given me access yet.
