ReBlog >> PhD in Social Media

Every time I read a story about Fatal1ty, the professional gamer, I laugh a little at all the times my parents told me to get off of the Atari, Commodore, or Sega - that no one could make a living playing video games and to hit the books. What they really should have said was that I wouldn't make a living playing video games (I'm not that lucky.)

Fast forward to today and some of us hear the same parental sentiment with the youth texting and blogging - "Put that down and get your studies done - you won't make a living typing with your thumbs!" But in this day and age - there's evidence to argue that concern... and degree programs to back up the rebuttal.

Here's a quick summary (ReBlog) from Web Strategy by Jeremiah where he interviews Vanina Delobelle, who has a PhD in Social Media and is the Global Product Director in charge of Social Media at Monster. I'd encourage everyone, job seekers and employers alike, to check out the entire interview (and to bookmark Jeremiah!)

Vanina, how’d you get into social media?

I started to blog in 2003 and lived the emergence of social media. Behaviours were very different, tools were enabling to engage people better and this new wave was very exciting. At that time I was running a marketing consultancy company targeting SMB and I realized that these new tools could be adopted very easily for...

Regarding your PhD in social media, what were your goals, what were you hoping to prove?

My research was very innovative, there were not many people working in this space at that time. It has been hard to find scientific researches that could help me. This trend was mainly driven by business. I wanted to prove academically these...

What were your findings?

Consumers want to take part of conversations happening with companies, they want to be involved, they want to share and this is the company’s interest to do the same with the market. My research was a scientific validation of Pinko marketing and social media use for companies. We could also define some kind of new marketing model for...

How will you apply this to your day job, what’s next?

This research has been a first step as the market is changing every day. I keep on updating my knowledge in this area. I think also that the big next step for social media is going to be...

Where can we find you online? I’m sure folks will have questions for you.

RecruiterGuy gets Hatemail!
Written by RecruiterGuy

It was bound to happen, I guess.  Sooner or later someone would send me an email that read to how much they hated me.  I thought I'd share this tramatic experience with you, my readers - all 5 of you (Hi Mom!)

Person that will remain anonymous wrote:

RG,

I hate you.  You blog and twitter and upload pictures and I can't keep up. I'm now so consumed with finding out what you and the rest of the world is doing that I have managed to forget to tweet about my own breakfast. It seems that anywhere I read content that someone is linking to where they are somewhere else.

I can't keep going at this rate.  I'm blogging almost daily and have made two new networking contacts in the last month that I would never have known if it weren't for getting sucked into this vaccuum in which you disgustingly thrive.  I may even get a new job out of it. Stop the madness.

Sincerely,

Person that will remain anonymous.

P.S. - can you please forward me that link with the globe and all the live twits?

Okay - so in the spirit of hitting all of my hate mail head-on...  I'll address this.

Person that will remain anonymous,

Thanks for taking the time to write me and I'm sorry to hear of your challenges lately.  It's almost unforgiveable that you'd forget to tweet your breakfast details - it is possible that of your 22 followers on Twitter there is one that is sadly trying to stay Linked In to you and as a result is wearing out the refresh button on his/her browser just waiting for this detail.  You have a responsibility, sir!

Now - it is evident to me that you need help managing your time better if you've only met two new networking contacts with the potential of new employment on the horizon.  Perhaps the following link that was tweeted to me by someone I'm following will help.  @Infosourcer sent a tweet this morning referencing Ten Ways Twitter Could Appeal to Joe Average.  Of course, she also sent a tweet sometime yesterday that listed just 5 neat toys to play with.  Those are here.  And I believe the globe you're referring to is Twittearth.  Incidentally, they are 'tweets' and not 'twits'...  well, most of the time.

Be glad that you're jumping on the bandwagon now, Person that will remain anonymous.  After all, you know it's inevitable that Google buy up Twitter and incorporate it into Gmail, Grand Central, Analytics, and more, right?  (doing my best here to start a rumor... pitch in, will ya'?)

Good luck to you, sir.
Sincerly,

RecruiterGuy

Okay, it's not really my voice, but it is an automated audio feed of each post here and is available to anyone that might prefer to listen instead of read. It's still in it's infancy as far as roll-out goes, but it's functional and worth sharing. Phase II of this little project will be a move to full W3 compliance.
